Teacher Qualification

From 1 September 2007, Further Education National Training Organisation (FENTO) standards have changed. New awards have been developed by Lifelong Learning UK (LLUK).

New entrants into the Further Education Sector will have to undertake the appropriate stage of the new teaching qualifications according to the criteria listed below.

PGCE or PCE (able to teach in Adult and Further Education)
Only teachers who teach a range of groups and levels in a full time or substantial teaching capacity.

New staff that have already commenced a recognised teaching qualification e.g. Certificate in Education or 7407 Stage 1 or 2 may continue on that course.

To gain the new Qualified Teacher, Learning and Skills (QTLS) status teachers will be required to gain a level 5 or above and provide evidence of effective professional practice.

To gain the new Qualified Teacher, Learning and Skills (QTLS) status new teachers will be required to gain a level 5 Diploma or above and provide evidence of effective professional practice.

Qualifications for Existing Teachers

  1. Those teaching in FE prior to September 2001 remain exempt from the statutory requirement to gain a teaching qualification.
  2. Those teachers already regarded as holding an appropriate teaching qualification under the 2001 regulations will continue to be regarded as qualified.
  3. Those teachers who entered FE after September 2001 and have since gained a teaching qualification under the 2001 regulations continue to be regarded as qualified.

All three of the above categories of existing teachers are exempt from the requirement to gain QTLS status.
