A man from Kingswinford who began to lose his sight at the age of 69 has turned his life around by focusing on a new way of communication. Andrew Main experienced sight difficulties in April 2010, and by early May was unable to drive or even read. Andy was assured his condition was treatable and was probably due to a virus.
Unfortunately in August 2010 he was told that no cure was available and that he would be blind for the rest of his life. Andy said: "After being told the news I went from being a fairly independent person to one totally depending on others and I seemed to lack the confidence to even try."
Due to his condition Andy was contacted by Dudley Vision Services who informed him of a computer course for visually impaired people and although reluctant he enrolled on the course with Dudley College last October.
Andy went on to say: "My typing skills were very basic using one finger. I couldn't understand how anyone could begin to teach me when I couldn't see. The patient tutor and her assistant began with the simplest of tasks and taught me the home keys on the keyboard."
Andy who has now almost completed three modules of his course at the Pocklington Centre in Stourbridge said: "I no longer feel isolated. I use the Internet to find out news and keep up to date with what's going on. I send emails enabling me to contact friends and family, especially my grandchildren. I am becoming more confident and use my typing skills to type reports for the golf club where I was a secretary."
"Andy's journey over the past few months has been life changing. He is a tremendous ambassador for the course and takes every opportunity to promote the provision and the software to other visually impaired learners. We are so proud of what he has achieved and the difference the course has made to his life," said Andy's tutor Jo Griffin.
A video has been made and posted on YouTube of Andy talking about Dolphin Guide. This is available at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mx0BvTH_DfI
