Dudley College's Netball Success

Dudley College’s competitive netball team have lots to celebrate, after a fantastically successful season! The team won the West Midlands College 2nd League, after beating Shrewsbury Sixth Form 45-37 in the leagues decider match. The winning match, which took place on Wednesday 18th April 2018 came shortly off the back of England netball team, The Roses, success at the Commonwealth Games, where they won Gold in a very close match against the Australian team. Dudley College’s netball team echoed The Roses success, as their final win secured them a promotion to the West Midlands College’s top division. Whilst also gaining them the title of undefeated champions of the league.

The netball team (pictured below), who are part of Dudley College’s competitive sports squad; Team Dudley, is made up of a range of Dudley College and Dudley Sixth first and second year students. Coach Donna Marks, who has been coaching Team Dudley netball, for 5 years believes the squad has had such a strong season because of the, “commitment, motivation and enjoyment from the players.”

One person who is keen to make an impact in League one next season, is current Team Dudley netball captain Kaitlin Willets, who has been in the Team Dudley netball squad for two years, and has played in the England Colleges under 21’s team during this time also. Kaitlin will be staying with Dudley College to study a HNC in Sports Coaching Science, and is looking forward to joining the girls on court next season, after an injury left her unable to play this year.
Kaitlin said the best thing about being involved in Team Dudley is the support, stating, “The support and belief from Team Dudley and across the College is always great, typically Netball is the first sport to be dismissed but with the College is gets a really ‘high profile’.”

As for the future of Team Dudley Netball, Donna envisages big things, “England winning Commonwealth gold has really put the sport on the map, and after the success of this season I would love to have two Team Dudley netball teams next season. I would encourage everyone interested in getting involved in playing netball at Dudley College to come along to trials at the start of the next college year no matter your experience or level, and just give it a go!”

Dudley College’s sports provision, Team Dudley, has been developed to demonstrate the college’s commitment to sport and add value to the student’s experience. Team Dudley participate in a range of sporting leagues, providing students with the opportunity to excel in their chosen sport, from beginner up to national level, all whilst completing their academic studies.
