Dudley College of Technology was delighted to host the WorldSkills UK International Summit at its Inspired Campus in Brierley Hill on Wednesday 19th May. The five-hour summit with the theme: Skills for Growth was aimed at educators, employers and government officials, in order to develop a deeper understanding as to how skills can be the key to economic recovery in a “post pandemic future”.

As part of the event Dudley College Principal and CEO Neil Thomas joined Dr Neil Bently-Gokman OBE to discuss the challenges in delivering higher technical skills to power advanced manufacturing and how further education can play a critical role in unleashing the potential of skills to drive economic growth.

As part of the day Dr Neil Bently-Gokman OBE head of WorldSkills UK launched the new Skills Taskforce for Global Britain, which will be chaired by former Director General of the CBI John Cridland CBE. The Taskforce will focus on the long term vision for productivity with a commitment to a skills-based economy in the next decade.

In delivering the skills summit which was hosted from a purpose built TV studio constructed for the day at the Inspired campus, students from the college’s Level 2 and3 Media Production courses supported production company Gass, in a variety of roles including vison mixer, show runner, technical engineer and production co-ordinator.

Karl Veltman, Assistant Principal who oversees Digital delivery across college said of the event: “ This was an invaluable opportunity for Dudley learners to work besides crew and learn from experts in delivering video production solutions for live broadcasting. Several of the students have been invited to undertake extended work placements with the Gass Team on other projects, which they are very excited by.”
