Course Summary

This course is suitable for individuals who wish to pursue a career in the animal care industry. It will help you find employment or progress to a Level 3 course. During this Animal Care course, you will undertake theory-based lessons, along with some practical activities related to the correct care and husbandry of a large range of animals.

Course Content

This qualification includes the following modules:
• Maintain animal accommodation
• Animal welfare
• Animal biology and health
• Animal behaviour and handling
• Work experience

The course will be based at The Broadway campus for tuition and tutorial, work experience is at Dudley Zoo, Wild Zoo, Brockswood animal sanctuary and Sedgley adventure centre.

Course Assessment

The assessments for this qualification are through assignments set during the year and externally set exams. These assignments can involve the demonstration of knowledge and practical skills. Part of the course will involve a 100 hour placement at a work-based site that deals with animals.

Materials

All class-based materials will be provided but you will need to provide writing materials and paper. You will need to have sturdy, waterproof footwear such as boots and warm clothing when spending time at work placement providers. You will also be expected to wear animal science dress code, which can be purchased at enrolment.

Qualifications

On successful completion of this course you will achieve the Animal Care BTEC Technical Diploma Level 2

Progression

This qualification will lead to employment in the industry of Animal Care or to further study/higher education.
Completing of the course will specifically allow you entry onto the Level 3 course in Animal management.

Entry Requirements

For entry onto this qualification, learners must have achieved three GCSEs at Grade 3 and a Grade 3 in GCSE English and preferably science.
