Course Summary

This qualification can help you if English is your second language and you are living or planning to settle in the UK. The course is offered at 5 different levels from pre-entry (for beginners) to Level 2 (for intermediate learners). You'll need to do a short test when you apply so we can put you on the level that's right for you.

Course Content

This ESOL for Care at Level 1 Health and Social Care Certificate qualification includes 9 Units which cover areas such as: Communication – the best ways of communication with a service user, Person Centred Care – the best care to give to a service user, Health and Safety, Principles and Values of care, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion – How to cater for the service users’ diverse needs, Safeguarding, Range of Services Provision and Roles of the Care worker, Mental Health Issues and Healthy Lifestyle.

Your teacher will use a variety of teaching methods to develop your Health and Social Care Skills and knowledge. This certificate course runs from September until June. The certificate course runs on one day a week from 9.15 am - 2.45 pm. The course will develop your employability skills to further improve your chances of progression onto the L2 programme and gain employment.

Course Assessment

Throughout the course you will build up a portfolio of assessed Units. There is no examination at all and there is no homework that must be completed outside the class. All work is completed in the classroom and all work submitted will be marked and returned within a week to show your progression.

The tutor actively encourages volunteering work with the local hospitals and voluntary care partners to get as much practical experience as possible to assist the theory. This practical side of the course will provide you with valuable experience that you can put onto your CV when applying for jobs. The tutor also posts up local vacancies from the care sector on the vacancies noticeboard in the ESOL Health and Social Care Base Room at the college.

Materials

All class-based materials, portfolio folder for evidence will be provided but you will need to provide a notebook and a pen to make the many notes in class so that you are able to write up your answers in your own words. These notes will also be of benefit to you should you move onto the L2 in Health and Social Care. You may not have to pay for your course if you are in receipt of certain benefits. Please bring any evidence of benefits with you when you come to enrol.

Qualifications

NCFE Level 1 Certificate in Health and Social Care

Progression

This qualification will lead to progression from Level 1 in Health and Social Care onto the Level 2 Certificate or Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care. You will also be able to progress in your English onto the Adult Functional Skills in English and maths. Other opportunities include Apprenticeships, going into employment or onto The Access courses at college or directly onto university if you have a L3 from your home country.

Entry Requirements

For entry onto this qualification learners must have reached Entry 3 or above in ESOL English or Entry 3 or above in Functional Skills English. This is to make sure that you will be able to cope with the written element of the course.
