Course Summary

The course focuses on the creative development of games, gameplay and game mechanics. Covering areas such as programming with an in-depth academic knowledge combining the practical skills that employers are seeking in games developers and designers. The course provides you with the opportunity to study a sweeping range of disciplines that include the production of both entertaining and educational games for the serious-minded players.

From the outset, you will be designing and developing conceptual ideas with a strong visual and creative base and will be taught the necessary skills to fully realise your own ideas from start to finish. Supported by digital modelling and set within a professional framework, you will be presented with an insight into the functionality of the industry that will personally equip you for a career progression in the industry. You’ll be working on live and exciting projects using the very latest industry standard software in up-to-date facilities.

This course prepares you for career progression into employment in a junior developer role within the Computer Games Industry. The HND Games design qualification integrates progression routes to complete your degree.

Students will have access to and utilise industry standard software, including Unreal Games Engine 5, Unity, GameMaker2 Studio and Blender. This course will provide a solid foundation in a fast-growing digital industry. You will learn how to create games and apply and integrate different types of game technology. There will be mix of practical and theoretical learning vital for an understanding of this field. You will also learn about implementation of Computer Games coding, utilising advanced Game Design Theory, Game Interface Design, audio engineering for games, and aspects of Animation related to the production of computer games. This is a full-time course delivered on campus which includes classes, practical tutorials, project work and self-study sessions.

Course Assessment

You will be assessed for this qualification through coursework for both practical and theoretical elements this will include presentations, portfolios and classwork. Assessments are checked both internally and externally through sampling to ensure rigorous standards are met.

Materials

Most reading materials for this course are available from the college library, however, you may need to purchase industry related textbooks that are relevant to your studies. There will also be opportunities to take part in educational visits and/or competitions.

Qualifications

Art and Design, HND - Level 5

Entry Requirements

A minimum of BTEC HNC Level 4 Games Design this could be from either a HNC in Creative Media or Art and Design specification.

In addition to this you will have GCSE English Language grade 4 or above and mathematics grade 4 or above.
