Course Summary

The broad purpose of the occupation is to ensure patient safety and service continuity for specialist healthcare medical devices or healthcare estates in a clinical setting. They conduct planned maintenance to prevent issues occurring and reactive maintenance. Other duties include acceptance testing, installation, decommissioning, and safety tests and checks.

1. This apprenticeship programme aims to equip learners with the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to ensure the healthcare engineer is able to:

- Complete their duties in line with company procedures and priorities
- ensure a safe and secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors
- ensure patient dignity, respect and Caldicott principles (patient confidentiality) are met
- comply with health and safety, environmental, sustainability, and engineering regulations and standards including specific healthcare requirements.
- comply with medical protocols for infection prevention and biohazard control

Course Content

This apprenticeship programme will cover a wide range of knowledge, skills and behaviours, and will cover units such as:

- The role of the medical engineer
- Health and Safety in the Engineering Workplace
- Mathematics for Engineering Technicians
- Acceptance Testing, Maintaining, Fault Finding and Decommissioning of Medical Equipment
- Anatomy, Physiology and Measurement
As well as a range of other mandatory and optional units.

Course Assessment

5. The course will have a range of holistic assessment methods ranging from; direct observation of practice, assignment writing and professional discussions throughout the duration of the apprenticeship programme. The End Point Assessment (EPA) will consist of the following elements:
- Assessment method 1. Observation with questions
- Assessment method 2. Interview underpinned by a portfolio of evidence
- Assessment method 3. Multiple-choice test
Performance in these end-point assessment methods will determine the overall apprenticeship standard grade of:
• fail
• pass
• merit
• distinction

Materials

You will require access to a laptop or desktop, with a WiFi connection.

Qualifications

On completion of this apprenticeship programme you will achieve the following:
- Level 3 apprenticeship as a Healthcare Engineer Specialist Technicial
- Btec Level 3 Advance Manufacturing Engineering (medical Engineering ) pathway

Progression

.On completion you can progress onto Higher Level Engineering apprenticeship programmes.

Entry Requirements

You will require 4 GCSEs at Grade C/4 or equivalent, including Mathematics, English and a Science. Relevant industry experience and a clear DBS check.

You will be expected to have a sound level of mathematics and a good level of written English. Evidence of GCSE Grade A-C in maths and English, of Functional Skills Level 2 equivalent is a requirement for entry onto this course, you will need to provide evidence prior to enrolment.

Prior learning, and experience will be taken into consideration on an individual basis, diagnostic tests will be carried out prior to enrolment.
