Course Summary

The aim of Level 3 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles qualification is designed to provide:
The knowledge, understanding and practical skills required to start a career as a mechanic/ technician in the motor vehicle service and repair industry.
It also provides the knowledge component of the IMI SSC Maintenance and Repair Apprenticeship framework for Light Vehicle.

Course Content

• Diagnose and rectify light vehicle engine and
• component faults
• Diagnose and rectify light vehicle chassis system faults
• Diagnose and rectify auxiliary equipment electrical faults
• Diagnose and rectify light vehicle transmission and
• driveline system faults
• Functional skills
• Work experience.

Course Assessment

50% of the course is practical-based. The requirements will be met by the use of the IMI Awards practical assessments with a detailed written report for each task.

These assessments ensure rigour and quality of assessment by measuring the candidate's application of the underpinning knowledge of critical light vehicle areas, such as braking systems and other light vehicle safety related systems.

To satisfy the regulatory body's requirements for these qualifications to receive national recognition, part of the assessment criteria must contain independent testing (i.e. external assessment).

This criteria has been met by the IMI Awards online tests. IMI Awards have developed a set of phase tests which will ensure that the candidate meets the learning outcomes not covered by the IMI Awards practical assessments.

Materials

You will need to provide your own stationery and your own safety shoes/boots (with steel toecaps) and overalls. A dress code and workbook are required and will be discussed at interview.

Level 3 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles (VRQ)

Level 4 Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles (VRQ)

Entry Requirements

It is recommended that for direct entry on to the Diploma, you will have a minimum of 4 years' work-based practical experience and 3 GCSEs at grade C or above in maths, English and a science-based subject.

Other appropriate prior learning could include the IMI Level 2 Award in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (various routes) or equivalent motor vehicle qualifications from other awarding bodies.

If you have no formal qualifications or prior experience, completion of the Level 2 certificate is considered to be essential.
