Course Summary

The content of this qualification has been developed in consultation with academics to ensure that it
supports progression to higher education. Employers and professional bodies have also been
involved and consulted to confirm that the content is appropriate and consistent with current
practice for learners choosing to enter employment in the sport and exercise science sector.

Course Content

Learners will study mandatory content areas:
• Applied Research Methods in Sport and Exercise Science
• Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology
• Coaching for Performance and Fitness
• Field and Laboratory-based Fitness Testing
• Functional Anatomy
• Nutrition for Sport and Exercise Performance
• Sport and Exercise Physiology.
There is then a range of optional units for further study, which have been designed to support progression to sport and exercise science courses in higher education.

Course Assessment

Achievement in the qualification requires a demonstration of the depth of study in each unit, assured acquisition of a range of practical skills required for employment or progression to higher education, and successful development of transferable skills. Learners achieving a qualification will have achieved across mandatory units, including external and synoptic assessment.

Units are assessed using a grading scale of Distinction (D), Merit (M), Pass (P), Near Pass (N) and Unclassified (U). The grade of Near Pass is used for externally-assessed units only.

All mandatory and optional units contribute proportionately to the overall qualification grade, for example, a unit of 120 GLH will contribute double that of a 60 GLH unit.

Materials

General stationery and a USB pen need to be provided by the student.

As a sports department, we pride ourselves on our reputation and professionalism in the area. This is evident in the way our students look around the college and, more importantly, whilst representing Dudley College at sports events and during work placements.

We have put a dress code package together at a cost of approximately £100 based on the needs of students for their course, Team Sports training and work experience.

You will need to pre-order the package during enrolment.

Sport BTEC L3 National Diploma or Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science

Progression



The Sport BTEC L3 National Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science is a two-year course that is equivalent to three A-levels. When you have finished the course you can use it to:

Get a job – or a better job if you are already working
Continue on to a further sports specific training course
Progress alongside other qualifications to go onto higher education at university
Progress onto the HNC/HND or Foundation Degree courses here at Dudley College

This course could open up possible career choices from the areas of – Teaching and Education, Health Sciences, Sports Coaching, Personal Training, Sports Management, Sports Journalism and many more.

Entry Requirements

You should have the following qualifications: 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above to include English, maths, and science (grade 4 and above), PE is desirable at grade 4 or above.

An interest and active participation in sports and fitness is essential along with an interest in the science behind the sport.
