Course Summary

The content of this qualification has been developed in consultation with employers and
professional bodies. This ensures that the content is appropriate and consistent with current
industry practice to enable learners to enter employment directly in a sports coaching role.

Course Content

Learners taking this qualification will study the following mandatory units:
•Careers in the Sport and Active Leisure Industry
• Health, Wellbeing and Sport
• Developing Coaching Skills
• Applied Coaching Skills
• Sport Development
• Self-Employment in Sport and Physical Activity.
The mandatory content allows learners to develop their technical skills, supported by underpinning
knowledge, and provides the opportunity for learners to relate these to the sports coaching and
development industry. Learners will gain the knowledge and applied skills to work with different
customers in sports development programmes, understand how best to impact participation and
improve performance skills, and develop the knowledge and skills needed to be self-employed in
the coaching and development sector.
Learners will also select one unit from a range of options allowing them to specialise in areas such
as nutrition, officiating, organising sports and fitness events and school sports delivery.

Course Assessment

Achievement in the qualification requires a demonstration of depth of study in each unit, assured
acquisition of a range of practical skills required for employment or progression to higher education,
and successful development of transferable skills. Learners achieving a qualification will have
achieved across mandatory units, including external and synoptic assessment.
Internally-assessed units are assessed using a grading scale of Distinction (D), Merit (M), Pass (P),
and Unclassified (U).

Materials

General stationery and a USB pen need to be provided by the learner. As a sports department, we pride ourselves on our reputation and professionalism in the area. This is evident in the way our students look around the college and, more importantly, whilst representing Dudley College at sports events and during work placements.

We have put a dress code package together at a cost of approximately £100 based on the needs of students for their course, Team Sports training and work experience.

Sport

Progression

The Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development has a primary focus on progression to employment as a coach. This will allow learners to work independently as a coach and have the skills and expertise to coach all levels of sports ability for both children and adults.

Employment opportunities would be at all participant levels, from beginner to elite. Examples of job roles include community coach, elite sports coach, holiday sports coach, after-school sports coach.

You could also progress to higher level study at Dudley College with the BTEC HNC in Sport and Exercise Science or FDSc Exercise and Wellness Management, or continue to study at a range of universities.

Entry Requirements

You should have the following qualifications:

5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above to include English and maths.

An interest and active participation in sports and fitness is essential and you will need a positive reference from an existing college tutor/school report.
