Course Summary

This qualification will enable learners to develop the knowledge and skills needed when supporting teaching and learning in primary, secondary or special schools. It covers a wide range of areas including children and young person’s development, supporting those with disabilities or special educational needs and communication and professional relationships.

Course Content

This course covers a diverse range of job roles and occupational areas working in children’s settings including early years and social care. The units in this qualification include:
Communication and professional development
Schools' policies and procedures and the wider environment in which they operate
Supporting children and young people with disabilities
Supporting learning environments
Supporting children and young people at mealtimes
Improving personal and team practice.

Course Assessment

You will be assessed by your tutor or assessor using a range of methods. This could include direct observation in the workplace, a portfolio of evidence, written assignments or a task set by the awarding body.

Materials

All class-based materials will be provided but you will need to provide a folder for your work and writing materials. 

Progression

This qualification shares mandatory units with the Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools Level 2 qualification, providing a direct progression route to Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning

Entry Requirements

For entry onto this qualification learners must be in a job role (paid or unpaid), be in a placement for a minimum of 12 hours per week and be sufficiently literate for your job role. You should also be at least 18 years’ old.

Note: This qualification leads to employment with vulnerable groups of people. Applicants are required to have a clear Police Record and have DBS check before embarking on the programme. DBS form is available via the College. Employers are required to employ staff who have clean records. There may be exceptions to this where minor non-relevant offences are on record. However, any offence may create difficulties in gaining employment in this field of work.

Prior to enrolment on this course, you will need to have an initial assessment in literacy and/or numeracy and an informal interview. This will ensure that you are enrolled on the right level of course to succeed and help us to identify and provide any support that you might need. Your initial assessment will take place at the same time as your interview.
