Course Summary

This course is designed for students with special educational needs or disabilities working at around entry level 2 or 3 with an interest in domestic cookery, or who may like to pursue a career or further study in catering.

The course focuses on developing student's interpersonal skills, time management & organisational skills, social skills as well as units specific to cooking, serving, food preparation and health & safety, to include:

• Personal safety
• Skills for setting a table
• Shopping for the home
• Food & drink cooking
• Using cooking skills in a domestic kitchen
• Customer service skills
• Preparing & serving food & drink
• Planning a menu

Students will be based at our Broadway Campus but will be asked to attend Inspired, Brierley Hill, for one session per week to take part in work experience activity in our student refectory.

The aim of this course is to give students with an interest in domestic cookery the opportunity to develop specific catering skills alongside improving skills required for college and work.

Course Content

Areas covered can include (but aren't limited to) the following:

• Teamwork skills
• Food drink and cooking
• Personal safety awareness
• Skills for setting a table
• Undertaking a work experience placement
• Shopping for the home
• Customer service skills
• Using cooking skills in the domestic kitchen

Course Assessment

Portfolio of evidence.

Formal qualifications can be taken in Functional Skills of GCSE Maths and English, if appropriate to the student's level of ability.

Materials

• Weekly ingredients (approx £2.50)
• Chef's jacket, hat and appropriate footwear for use in refectory or catering kitchens.
• Contribution to trips and visits

Qualifications

AIM Employabilty Skills Certificate or Diploma Entry Level 2/3

Students will be individually assessed at interview by both Support & Curriculum Teams to ensure academic and support needs can be met by the college.
