Course Summary

This course is aimed at students with special educational needs and disabilities to further develop independence, social and work-based skills, where appropriate, across many areas of interest. Students engage in practical, purposeful activity to learn about their community and opportunities therein, personal rights and responsibilities, their own and others' social and emotional well-being as well as classroom based activities to develop skills such as the use of IT, art, self-care, health and safety in the home and cookery.

Course Content

The course can include a range of activities and units that are tailored to suit the interests of the group and individual students within it. Possible units could be, but aren't limited to, the following:
Personal well-being
Health & hygiene
Preparing a meal
Visiting places of importance to me (Doctors, hospital, banks)
Personal communication skills and use of sensory aids
Creative skills, sensory art, crafts and music
Community participation – visits out to local places, visiting speakers, fund raising, day-to-day life, preparing for adulthood
Embedded literacy and numeracy

Course Assessment

Students are assessed through witness statements, Q&A, observation and practical application, collated as a portfolio of evidence.

Materials

Overalls and appropriate footwear for use in the garden.
Appropriate clothing and footwear for sports.
Cooking apron, charges for cookery ingredients.
Other clothing and/or equipment may be required depending on activities each group choose to become involved in.

Entry Requirements

Students will be individually assessed by both Support and Curriculum Teams during interview to ensure support and academic needs can be met throughout the duration of the course.
